Sir Ken Robinson
This video speaks to the problem with have in education today. It is
only when one excels in math and humanities that one is called learned
and progressing. Other forms of learning (as in dancing, etc..) is not
really learning because it doesn't lead to a job or career. Mr.
Robinson is right on the money with this one. Creativity comes in all
forms and not just when one excells in math and language. The examples
that he presented (the girl drawing the picture of God, and the boys
taking the role of the three wise men) are very powerful in showing that
we need to look at creativity with a whole new approach.
As a teacher, I try to find new ways of approaching my topic and how to
reach my students. I thiink I have been successful because I do not
rely on the textbook only approach, but go to other forms of teaching
and making sure that their voice is heard. I do a lot of videos,
projects, posters where students can create and come up with their own
interpretation of the topic. As teachers we need to break away from the
way things are done and come up with more creative ways in order to
recognize how a student learns. One size does not fit all. We need to
tailor our lesson to individuals and see how they can learn. Students
need to feel accepted if their answers are not the same as anyone else.
We need to look for teachable moments.
